People who have lived here for a while tell you that the traffic in Nairobi is getting worse every week. It won’t be long before all the roads are so clogged that people will simply abandon their vehicles where they sit.

But many, many people walk along the roads. Considering the volume of foot traffic, the “built environment” (as they say) is not very pedestrian friendly.

So out walking the other day, I came across these black and white poles and I thought, “Oh, this is nice, they’re protecting us pedestrians.”

On reflection, though, I realized that they—whoever “they” are—are simply trying to keep the matatus from driving on the sidewalk.
